Peace Regional Outreach Campus hosts fundraiser for former Outreach family - "Money for Makenzie"

On November 28, 2014, Peace Regional Outreach Campus (PROC), Fresen Bros. and community volunteers gathered to raise funds to help former student, Kim Fickle and her daughter Makenzie through the PROC fundraiser “Money for Makenzie.”

The beef on a bun fundraiser organized and led by PROC raised $7500 which will help the family to cover costs as five year old Makenzie seeks treatment in Edmonton.

In mid-October a tumour was found on Makenzie’s brain and the cancer has spread to her spine. Makenzie has undergone several surgeries and according to Makenzie’s auntie, Kyla Fickle, “Makenzie is a happy little girl and is in good spirits.”

Kyla, who attends PROC, also expressed her appreciation to the community for their support. “There are a lot of people that are helping out. This will help our family a lot.”

PROC wishes to thank Freson Bros for their generous donation of half the cost of the meat and buns as well as the service in cooking, shredding and keeping the beef warm. PROC also extends gratitude to community volunteers who helped to prepare and deliver beef on a bun and to community members and several businesses and organizations who placed orders and donated over and above the cost of the orders.

“The community support and the support of Freson Bros is absolutely amazing” says Carol Van Slyke, PROC Principal. “The community stepped up in a major way and we are very grateful.”

Carol also commends outreach staff, students and “Money for Makenzie” fundraising coordinators Lorena Coombes and Lisa Yakemchuk for their support, time and leadership.

“Outreach is a family and we support our families” says Carol. “If our current students or past students need us, we are here. That is what families do.”

Makenzie’s progress is continually updated at where donations can also be received.
